South Eddy County – A drug and gang/crime free community,
Now available on a cell phone in your pocket: Text Tipping
In our travels about town, Coalition Preventionist Alison Bryant and I have heard, far too often and from people of all ages, a theme of "fear of retaliation" for reporting crime. We have also heard a number of incredible, inspiring true stories of crimes that were resolved, or busts that were made following a series of crimes, with one citizen's simple tip as a turning point in the case.
I am very pleased to announce one less reason for people to be in fear of "doing the right thing" and reporting crime. Cell phone users across Eddy County now have the ability to provide tips through the power of anonymous text messaging. Eddy County Sheriff’s Office, Carlsbad Police Department, Pecos Valley Drug Task Force, Crime Stoppers of Eddy County, and Anderson Software, the industry leader in law enforcement tip management software and web applications, have joined together to provide this service. The Coalition is helping to promote this new avenue of safe, anonymous communication for tipsters.
The service allows text messaging informants to remain anonymous by encrypting the text messages and routing them through several secure servers, protecting the personal details of the informant. It also allows police to respond by text message to the originating cell phone without ever knowing the identity of the individual who left the tip. The user’s information is always given an alias and a unique ID before being sent. This secure application allows the tipster and the investigator to have two-way dialog while always keeping the user’s identity completely anonymous.
Local law enforcement personnel encourage everyone to report information about any non-urgent illegal activity, such as unsolved cases, vandalism, theft, the sale and distribution of drugs or information about crimes that are being planned in the community or schools. Crime Stoppers offers cash rewards for tip that lead to arrest of suspects.
Tips can be submitted by texting code word “StopACrime,” plus tip to CRIMES (274637). Tips can still be phoned in to 575-887-1888. Carlsbad High School's Student Council created the code word with support from Principal Ray Burrola and School Resource Officer Rob Navarrette.
TipSoft is currently used by NYPD, LAPD, Chicago Police Department, New Scotland Yard and across Canada. We are proud to have been part of adding "Carlsbad, New Mexico" to this list.
